Darwin is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Live & Local Series. Every Friday in July and August free concerts are hosted across North Vancouver, bringing families out to enjoy great music, fun dancing and time with their neighbours.
Performing Friday, August 2nd in Lynn Valley Village from 7-9pm, The Smith and Jones Band has been a part of the concert series for over 20 years. We interviewed band co-founder, Brian Zalo, to find out more about the band, why they love Live & Local events and what their favourite part of performing is.
Darwin is a proud supporter of the Live & Local Concert Series as we understand the importance of giving back to the communities in which we work, live and play.
With a number of talented bands performing at Live & Local events and bringing the community together every summer, we thought it would be a great idea to highlight one of the bands that have been playing at these concerts for the past 20 years, the Smith and Jones band.
We interviewed band co-founder, Brian Zalo, to find out more about the band, why they love Live & Local events and what their favourite part of performing is.
How did the band get started?
I co-founded Smith and Jones with my good friend and bass player Craig Alan Mac.
How long has Smith and Jones been together?
Smith and Jones have been together since February 10th, 2000 – so nearly 20 years.
What style of music does Smith and Jones play?
We’ve all come from the 80s rock scene, but in the 90s country music really kicked in so we made the switch. However, we play many styles from Rock to Country and Blues.
What is your favourite song by Smith and Jones? Why?
A single called “My Country”, which is off our first album. We’ve gained some notoriety with that song across Canada and even all the way into Australia. It’s upbeat and somewhat anthemic.
What do you love most about the Live & Local Summer Concert Series?
Our fans are always amazing at these events; they get involved and get into what we are doing. The organizers are incredible and very accommodating, which allows us to do what we do best.
Why do you think Live & Local is so popular?
It’s a great way to get out for a day or an evening and enjoy what we have to offer the west coast.
People gravitate to a good time and great music.
Music is always therapeutic, it moves people emotionally and even triggers memories. Music and art have a way to get deep into our souls and thought processes that we may not even realize are there.
Where can we find Smith and Jones this summer?
With a very busy music schedule, Smith and Jones are on the music scene touring all summer long. You can find us performing at concerts, clubs and different shows all over the place. Keep your eyes on the press.
